Julius Papp
Origin:
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada.
Years Playing: Started in 1985 playing birthdays & weddings, then clubs in 1987 – 24 years so far!
Style: Soulful Electronic Dance Music (from Deep House to Downtempo / Midtempo grooves with elements from Disco, Jazz, Funk, Latin & Afro.
Affiliation: NeoDisco Music | Salted Music | Julius Papp
Music: To hear a number of Syd live mixes, from Burning Man to Ruby Slye to LoveFest, go here.
Influences:
My earliest influences were from the dance clubs in Montreal as well as commercial radio programming which included an eclectic mix from Rock to Disco to Jazz & Funk. I absorbed most of it!
I
got my first break:
First club gig came in 1987 at a venue called Club Oasis In San Jose.
Some
DJs I like playing with are:
That list would be quite long, so let me just say that I really enjoy DJ’s that bring something unique in their set – that could be doing something out of the ordinary like changing tempos during their set or playing a classic track that not everyone recognizes but still moves the floor.
Favorite
thing about the SF scene:
I think San Francisco still has one of the strongest dance club scenes. I think people love to go out and groove. They love the music. They love their DJ’s and they continue to support the scene. They are open-minded which helps the DJ’s do their thing.
Least
favorite thing about the SF scene:
Even though I think the SF scene is one of the strongest, it has certainly changed over the years. I think the scene has been diluted by a more commercial music format that seems less innovative and less interesting.
My
favorite SF party is/was:
Obviously, for me, it’s the Salted events at Mighty that Miguel Migs and I host each month. We have dedicated supporters! My Favorite Club To Play In Is – Any venue with an enthusiastic crowd!
If
I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment
would
be:
I would have one stage that was dedicated to today’s Electronic Music scene with various acts like The Thievery Corporation and Petalpusher. A live set with Larry Heard (Fingers Inc.) and Louie Vega’s Elements of Life band and The Roots. Would also love to get Stuart Matthewman with Sweetback. I’d also have a 70’s rock stage with Pink Floyd playing the entire “Dark Side Of The Moon” album followed by Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan and Billy Joel with Elton John and finally Gino Vannelli. I would also have a jazz stage featuring legends like Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Roy Ayers, Pat Metheny and I’d have SADE close it out. Next up would be an R&B/Funk stage with Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Prince doing a set from his 70’s/80’s repertoire of music. Of course I’d have to have a Disco stage with the Queen – Donna Summer, along with the amazing Salsoul & Philly International artists and finally capping it with the Electronic Disco King himself – Giorgio Moroder.
If I couldn't play records I would probably be a
professional:
I still only know music – without it, I’m in trouble!
I want to thank these people for helping me get
this
far:
Many indeed but regarding my DJing – Fil Maresca for giving me my first club gig.
What
you want people to know and we didn't ask:
My favorite sport is Hockey and my favorite team is the Montreal Canadiens.
My motto is:
“Quality over quantity!”
