The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
The whole communal energy and good vibes of all walks of people coming together and gettin down at the old warehouse parties in the early 90's was great and very inspiring!.... I was playing in bands at the time but got really into DJ'ind at friends house partys and then clubs eventually. It was addicting and alot of fun!... I never thought I would be doing this and creating music full time making a living on it. I just loved it!

Influences:
Everything from rock, to funk, reggae, hip-hop, soul, and just about everything... As well as people and places.

I got my first break:
Playing at little warehouse and house parties.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
There is alot of local talent and you gotta support that. Guys like Julius, Mo, Jay, Franky and many more.

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
Diversity and character. There’s a lot of great DJ’s and support from the people, which keeps this city rocking all the time!

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
Sound systems can always be better over all..... I also wish the bars served later than just 2 am in California! We gotta get that changed somehow eventually, and it would be a whole new kick in the ass for the city. Some new outdoor venues and events would be great as well in the summer.

My favorite SF party is/was:
Love Garage and lift were rockin. Boat Parties and Groove Kitchen was a lot of fun also!

My favorite Club to play in is:
I dont have just 1 favorite cause it changes alot through time. Sir Henrys in Cork (Ireland) was completetly off the hook, but closed recently. La Terraza in Barcelona is great. The 'good vibrations' outdoor daytime festival tour in Australia is rockin! There are too many to name.

If I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment would be:
The Rolling stones, Bob Marley, Jimmy Hendrix, Burning Spear, Prince, Steely Dan, Gangstarr, Tribe called Quest, Zeppelin, the Cars, Sade, shit, I could go on for a very long time here on this one!

If I couldn't play records I would probably be a professional:
Recording Studio Junky, writing and creating music all the time, Oh wait, I already do! Definately playing live in a band. Im about to start a new one anyway!.

I want to thank these people for helping me get this far:
All the music lovers and supporters worldwide....

What you want people to know and we didn't ask:
Keep it real!... Be a good person. There’s enough hate in this world!

My motto is:
"Keep it real!"

The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
Hearing Hot Mix 5 on the radio circa 1985 Artist

Influences:
The Police, Rush, Yellow and playing trumpet in concert/marching band

I got my first break:
Meeting resident DJ Terry Martin outside of Medusa (Chicago club) and being invited to hang out in the DJ booth the following week.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
DJ Heather, Derrick Carter, Sneak, Diz, Iz, Luke Solomon, DJ Spinna

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
When you leave the club at night it's never cold outside

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
Lack of good sound systems.

My favorite SF party is/was:
Jazid Up Mondays (Mushroom Jazz) and Boogie Buffet

My favorite Club to play in is:
They haven't built it yet.

If I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment would be:
A 3-night festival with 3 bands and one DJ playing in between the bands' sets each night. Night 1: The Police, Talking Heads and Rush with myself as DJ. Night 2: James Brown, Tribe Called Quest reunion and Cymande with DJ Spinna as DJ. Night 3: Kraftwerk, Yellow and Liasons Dangereuse with Derrick Carter as DJ.

If I couldn't play records I would probably be a professional:
Soccer Player

I want to thank these people for helping me get this far:
My parents, RedNail crew, Gramaphone Records (Chicago), Patty Ryan-Smith/Mushroom Management, Heather Goddard, Om Records, All World Entertainment, Synergize, Tweekin Records, SF promoters who booked me way back when, all the clubbers who've come to hear me play and danced all night, everyone who bought my cd's and mix tapes

My motto is:
"Whatever you do, do it good"

Lorin

Origin: Born to a family of butterflies along the shores of northern california.
Years Playing:
DJing and producing for 10 years, involved with creating music for 15 years.
Style:
Anything deep... sounds that catch you by the hand and lead you into a forgotten rendition of the lambada so nasty, you almost blush, but you don’t because it feels so good... Preference: ultra throbbing bass, mad cut-up sonic tricks, slamming percussion, and gorgeous hypnotics. ...but that’s more in terms of production...DJing focuses on anything from hip hop to breaks, to house, to DnB, to acid-laced polka.
Affiliation:

The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
The first party I ever went to was “Basics” by “The Gathering” posse...I lost my marbles to DJ Spun. I didn’t know how to dance, so I just headbanged, and hugged people who would swat me with giant balloons that were covered in glow-in-the-dark lotion....aaahhhh the good old days.

Influences:
The Police, Rush, Yellow and playing trumpet in concert/marching bandThe Cure, Simon & Garfunkel, Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Metallica, Tipper, Freq Nasty, Kenny Dope, Mr. Oizo, Mr. Scruff, Dan F, Ed Rush & Optical, DJ Garth, NWA, Orishas, Uberzone, Nirvana, Freestylers, Flying Rhino, Sibilant, Metal Spark, Adam Ohana, Subal, Brother, Si Begg...jesus, I could go on forever, but those are a few.

I got my first break:
Honestly its all a blur...Im not sure when I went from “mad-nutter-frothing-at-the-mouth-cuz-i-love-music-so-much-on-the-dancefloor” to “mad-nutter-frothing-at-the-mouth-cuz-i-love-music-so-much-behind-the-decks”....but now I can be both.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Anyone listed in those influences along with el circo posse like Papa Chango, Trainwreck, Malakai, Rab or pure freakz like Dorfex Bos, Lux, Dave Jolley...but those are all more producers than Djs...which I think is a general trend (thank god). The key thing about everyone of them is that they are 100% real and unique, not a fabricated DJ with the standard haircut and collar-shirt whose name everyone recognizes cuz he pays magazines to say he is cool.

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
The “vibe” is 100% totally unique, 100% totally unstoppable, 100% totally reinventing itself, eating itself, dating itself, taking long walks with itself on the beach and whispering sweet nothings into its own ear...taking lambada forbidenn dance classes with itself...MMM!!!

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
The only critique I would have is that there is too much going on all at once...but that’s equally a blessing.

My favorite SF party is/was:
WhatIsReal?, Koinonea, CCC, 13 Moontribe, Cell Space....hands down those 5 amorphous entities have created the most insane, unique, full-energy gatherings teeming with authenticity and the vibe that tastes like mango nectar running down your chin on a hot summer day.

My favorite Club to play in is:
I prefer underground spots, and the magic of a forest to a club....”lights and lazers by the sun, moon and stars,” as Spaceship Gaia always said. But there are of course some dope clubs, and the thing about clubs is TIGHT MUTHAFORKIN SOUND!!!!! So for that: 1015, Barneveld, Mighty, Fluid (BC)....
Best SF venue for sure is CELL SPACE...

If I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment would be:
Now that question is just absurd...because to answer it would take at least a week, so to attend it might take a month...but sheeeesh...I’d hafta divide that up...there’s just too much epic music...I mean DEAD OR ALIVE??? like I can book Mozart and John Lennon and EZ-E at the same festival? God, Im giddy just thinkin about that. But whatever I did, any music festival I was involved in would hopefully push the boundaries of what is expected, both in terms of new music, new sounds, new styles, and ideally TONS OF POLITICAL ORGANIZING. As citizens of this country I find the concept of partying, clubbing, and dancing mindlessly to be utterly profane...and at best its irresponsible...we have a RESPONSIBILITY as citizens of the US (both the most privileged and the most dastardly in terms of a homicidal Foreign Policy) to use our privilege at all times to:

1. WAKE EACH OTHER UP
2. SPREAD THE WORD
3. FIGHT TYRANNY, INJUSTICE, AND FASCISM at home and abroad, especially when its in our name, like in Iraq or Afghanistan.

If I couldn't play records I would probably be a professional:
Gimp, because pushing play on a record player is about as easy as it gets. Now if I wasn’t a professional DJ, I might explore the wild world of kite-flying, or giving Karate lessons to my pet Iguana(who is also my guru - I call him Baba Ram GuGu), or being a tour guide through the produce section at Whole Foods Market.
If that failed, I could take up writing, film, teaching, public office, social change, work in the peace core, work at a hospice, fight cancer, fight illiteracy, or fight the Bu$h Administration....or, on rainy days, I could take a group of 7 year old children and together we could SLASH DICK CHENEY’S TIRES....it all sounds fun.

I want to thank these people for helping me get this far:
I have been thinking about this...I need to create like a permanent list or something, because the people who have helped me in one way or another number in the thousands...seriously...everything I have accomplished or created is 100% indebted to so many people in the world...some who don’t even know it..and I’m not making a general statement...I mean there are specifically thousands of people who have changed my life and empowered me to grow. I will thank each of you in person.

What you want people to know and we didn't ask:
Well you didn’t ask if George W. Bush stole the election, but the answer is:
NO..the Republican Party, Fox News, and Halliburton did. But George W. Bush is still a punk.

My motto is:
“Privilege confers responsibility. You can face that responsibility, which may not be easy, but its a lot easier for us than for people in almost all the world, or you can shirk that responsibility; in which case you are leaving the future to be decided by forces that are anything but benign....." The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
When I was around eight years old I was visiting the Pompidou Center in Paris and a performance artist had suspended huge tree trunks from the ceiling and was drumming along the whole lenth of them. It was the first time I remember being moved by rhythm, and left such a lasting impression on me and that I gravited towards the power of the drum ever since. A number of years later I was living in Paris again and there was a late night television show which always started and ended with "Sex Machine" by James Brown ... that about says it all.

Influences:
Sex, sex, and more sex.

I got my first break:
My first day back in Paris in 1995 I was walking around the neighborhood, picked up a flyer that had the names of a couple of SF performers, Jeremy (who helped start BPM Records here) and Shaun Benson (SF singer). They were playing at a club called Queen on the Champs Elysees that night, where I went to see them and then met them at their hotel the next day. A Paris House music radio station had brought them to play and I was translating an interview between them.
When they found out I dj'ed, the people from the radio station asked me if I would like to play on air the following week, and they like it so much that they requested I do a show for the next three months. That gave me the opportunity to met djs, producers, and promoters from around the world, which led to a great year in Paris and I haven't stopped since.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Stacey Pullen, Freq Nasty, Hybrid, Adam Freeland, Yeen, Adnan, Michele Bass, Ooah, Majitope, Smoove, Garth, Jeno, Ellen Ferratto, and so many more.

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
Filled With Lots Of Soul

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
I've got so much appreciation ... no need to go there.

My favorite SF party is/was:
Everything from the early rave days: Wicked, the Full Moon parties, Boogie Buffett, Toontown (thank you Lawrence and all the rest), Rave Called Sharon, Together, Pete Avila's Thursday party at DV8, and all the other's that were so great and will stay with me for life. Special thanks to Otto and Dae for current party Summercamp / Snowcamp. Adam Ohana does a great job with "Get Freaky". And of course Burning Man.

If I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment would be:
Tony Humphries, Lil Louie Vega, Tedd Patterson, Frankie Feliciano, Frankie Knuckles, Danny Teneglia, Pete Avila (Your Mama's House), Ruben Mancias, My Taboo Posse (Sir Charles, Patrick Wilson, Kevin Koga, jojoflores, Lamont Young) plus PA's from Julie Mcknight, Jocelyn Brown, Mr Ali, Nuyorican Soul, Moulton Studio players, Lisa Shaw, and Jill Scott, Shaun Escofferey to name a few...........

The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
Listening to pirate radio in London in the mid eighties, before house music hit. It inspired me to write more groove based songs for the punk band I'd been in for 4 years, which of course drove my bandmates crazy, so I quit the band and started djing instead...

Influences:
Right now: My son's punk rock band - Slotmachine, Avante Garde English music from the early 80's, the sound of the cello, my dreams and nightmares.

I got my first break:
By playing for the love of it, for free, at many late night "blues", "warehouse" and "squat" parties and festivals in England in the late eighties.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Anyone who feels the fire....

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
The freaks who give it so much life and flavor

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
The "glossy" clubs that have no originality, style nor flavor.!

My favorite SF party is/was:
Full Moon Parties.

My favorite Club to play in is:

If I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment would be:

Becoming a DJ just sort of happened. Tracks...oh man, so many..! As for parties, I most definitely enjoyed "Wicked", "Carefree", and "Boogie Buffet". Loved them!

Influences:
Having 7 older siblings listening to old classic rock (Stones, Ten Years The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Who, Ten Years After..etc and of course, Herb Albert and The Tijuana Brass. Major influence by my older brothers and sisters.

I got my first break:
The Holy Cow through Scot Peterson, The End Up, and The Beer Cellar.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Indifferent...as long as they have manners

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
I can only speak for myself since the scene I know is really the scene I play at and I don't really DJ too much outside of SF: the scene seems to bring a sophistication and knowledge of the music, the people's energy and diversity is great. I'm very lucky to be part of it!

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
Not enough toilets at the clubs.

My favorite SF party is/was:
Back in the day, before I became a DJ, I used to always go to "Carefree", "Wicked" "Boogie Buffet" and at times "Community" (tougher - since it was on a work night).

The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
The stand out track was Orbital "Halcyon+on+on." That one pretty much turned me away from the Smashing Pumpkins to this weird, spooky electronic music. As for parties, Eklektic-Hektic was my Mecca. The first DJ whom I thought was the coolest was Grandmaster DXT who did the scratching on "Rockit."

Influences:
Marc Bolin, Diamond David Lee Roth, Parry Farrell, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Flea, Bon Jovi, ryuchi sakamoto, philip glass, mike oldfield, tangerine dream, Stan Getz, Billy Holiday, Hunter S. Thompson, Magnum P.I., Goldie.

I got my first break:
I was 7 and jumping my bmx bike over a tree stump and
didn't quite clear it. Wait, is that what you meant? Or, there's the time I found "Rapper's Delight" with "The Message" on the flip at Tower Records when it had a head shop in the back. That was the dopest break of all.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Kapt'n Kirk, 8 Ball, Mancub and the Geometrist from the Space Cowboys. Geez any of the Space Cowboy DJ's are money in the bank. Ben Chun and Haylon from False Profit. Murph Star.

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
The rich and flavorful cuisine. And the
wine--phenomenal Pinots and Cabernets from Napa and the central coast. The food and wine in SF is legendary. Indie fashion designers like Silver Lucy, Tamo, and Fliudance, who are defining the emerging SF styley. An audience with a deep and passionate appreciation for Bass.

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
Vegans and Speed. Not necessarily
in that order.

I would probably be a professional smart-ass or Rodeo Clown.

I want to thank these people for helping me get this far:

My mom for encouraging my musical explorations and my sister for putting up with the explorations. Diego and the El Circo Dome. Felix the Dog, Ms. E, Ms. Throwdown, Audio Angel and those responsible for Eklektic. Seven and Sol. The Very Reverend Alan Jones at Grace Cathedral. All the freakz from Brass Tax, (and you are FREAKZ!) I know I'm leaving someone out, so I'll thank you in person. Mostly, I want to thank all the SF breakz headz for being the freakiest freaks that ever freaked in freakville.

The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
Jondi: Qoöl & Spesh ... for years I didn't DJ but only produced, but it looked really fun so I gave it a go and went to Spesh's DJ boot camp.
Spesh: For me it was back in the 80s hearing DJs like Steve Masters mix on the radio. I was already buying tracks on 12", and I became obsessed with figuring out how it all worked. Doc Martin was the DJ who make house music click for me.

Jondi: The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, New Order, Talking Heads, Art of Noise, Psychic TV, KLF, LFO, Eric B. & Rakim, James Holden.
Spesh:
Sasha & John Digweed, New Order, Laurent Garnier, D-Train, Doc Martin, The Buzzcocks, and a thousand other bands, DJs, artists. I think I absorb something from everything I'm exposed to.

I got my first break:
Jondi: signing the first track i ever finished to a San Francisco dance music label (Megatech), then joining the Trip 'n Spin label collective
Spesh: Around 1991 when Martel asked me to play at his new party, "Release" every Saturday night.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Jondi: Hyper D, Hoj, James Zabiela, Jerry Bonham, Jax, Pia D
Spesh: Any one of the Qoöl residents. A few more on the local tip would be, Tyler Reed, DJ Splice, Scott Carrelli, D Spurlock, or anyone else with good taste and good skills.

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
Jondi: freaks and phreaqs
Spesh: There are so many parties to choose from every night.

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
Jondi: afterhours license hard are to get for venues
Spesh: There are so many parties to choose from every night.

My favorite SF party is/was:
Jondi: Qoöl (self-serving, I know, but it's true)
Spesh:
Qoöl for sure. Can I pick more? Sweet, Spundae, Opel

My favorite Club to play in is:

Jondi: 111 Minna, but Sikamikanico in Oslo was really fun.
Spesh: There are so many really good ones, I can't decide. Sorry!

Jondi: White Stripes, Postal Service, Dntel, Autolux, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Jondi & Spesh, Jonathan Lisle, James Holden, Momu
Spesh: A two day mixture of bands and DJs would be fun. Day 1: New Order, John Digweed, Moby, Momu, Jondi & Spesh, Adam Freeland. Day 2: Infusion, Sasha, Grayarea, Green Velvet, Underworld, Hardfloor

If I couldn't play records I would probably be a professional:
Jondi: gambler, but probably not a successful one
Spesh: Chef

I want to thank these people for helping me get this far:
Jondi: my wife Kia, Spesh, Mark Musselman, Jackie von Treskow, Megan James, Christian Matthews, everyone at 111 Minna, all Qoölios, my family, all my roommates and girlfriends over the years who have more or less tolerated me learning how to make and play music
Spesh: Astrid (my wife), Jondi, Jackie von Treskow, Megan James, Xian, John Digweed, Martel Toler, Eiming Jung, all SF's underground scenesters, and Astrid one more time because I can't thank her enough!

What you want people to know and we didn't ask:
Jondi: That we love all of our fans and couldn't’t do it with out them.
Spesh:
Dave spins vinyl, I play synths, and Live means that we NEVER plan our sets, use sequencers or computers, or any pre-recorded shit! It's Always on the fly.

My motto is:

Jondi: The nature of the self is illusory and ephemeral. And it's probably a good idea to skip that fourth glass of whiskey.
Spesh: To be responsible to myself and those that I love. Also to always keep music in my life somehow.
