Lorin

Origin: Born to a family of butterflies along the shores of Northern California.
Years Playing:
DJing and producing for 10 years, involved with creating music for 15 years.
Style:
Anything deep. Sounds that catch you by the hand and lead you into a forgotten rendition of the lambada so nasty, you almost blush, but you don’t because it feels so good. Preference: ultra-throbbing bass, mad cut-up sonic tricks, slamming percussion, and gorgeous hypnotics... but that’s more in terms of production. My DJing focuses on anything from hip-hop to breaks, house, drum'n'bass, to acid-laced polka.

The track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
The first party I ever went to was “Basics” by “The Gathering” posse, I lost my marbles to DJ Spun. I didn’t know how to dance, so I just headbanged, and hugged people who would swat me with giant balloons that were covered in glow-in-the-dark lotion... ahhhh the good old days.

Influences:
The Cure, Simon & Garfunkel, Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Metallica, Tipper, Freq Nasty, Kenny Dope, Mr. Oizo, Mr. Scruff, Dan F, Ed Rush & Optical, DJ Garth, NWA, Orishas, Uberzone, Nirvana, Freestylers, Flying Rhino, Sibilant, Metal Spark, Adam Ohana, Subal, Brother, Si Begg...jesus, I could go on forever, but those are a few.

I got my first break:
Honestly it's all a blur. I'm not sure when I went from “mad-nutter-frothing-at-the-mouth-cuz-i-love-music-so-much-on-the-dancefloor” to “mad-nutter-frothing-at-the-mouth-cuz-i-love-music-so-much-behind-the-decks”. But now I can be both.

Some DJs I like playing with are:
Anyone listed in those influences above, along with el circo posse like Papa Chango, Trainwreck, Malakai, Rab or pure freakz like Dorfex Bos, Lux, Dave Jolley, but those are all more producers than DJs, which I think is a general trend (thank god). The key thing about every one of them is that they are 100% real and unique, not a fabricated DJ with the standard haircut and collar-shirt whose name everyone recognizes cuz he pays magazines to say he is cool.

Favorite thing about the SF scene:
The “vibe” is 100% totally unique, 100% totally unstoppable, 100% totally reinventing itself, eating itself, dating itself, taking long walks with itself on the beach, whispering sweet nothings into its own ear, and taking lambada forbidenn dance classes with itself...MMM!!!

Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
The only critique I would have is that there is too much going on all at once...but that’s equally a blessing.

My favorite SF party is/was:
WhatIsReal?, Koinonea, CCC, 13 Moontribe, Cell Space, hands down those five amorphous entities have created the most insane, unique, full-energy gatherings, teeming with authenticity and the vibe that tastes like mango nectar running down your chin on a hot summer day.

My favorite Club to play in is:
I prefer underground spots and the magic of a forest to a club, "lights and lazers by the sun, moon and stars," as Spaceship Gaia always said. But there are of course some dope clubs, and the thing about clubs is TIGHT MUTHAFORKIN SOUND!! So for that: 1015, Barneveld, Mighty, Fluid (BC). Best SF venue for sure is CELL SPACE.

If I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment would be:
Now that question is just absurd, because to answer it would take at least a week, so to attend it might take a month! But sheeeesh, I’d hafta divide that up, there’s just too much epic music. I mean, dead AND aline? Can I book Mozart, John Lennon, and EZ-E at the same festival? God, I'm giddy just thinkin about that. But whatever I did, any music festival I was involved in would hopefully push the boundaries of what is expected, both in terms of new music, new sounds, new styles, and, ideally, TONS OF POLITICAL ORGANIZING. As citizens of this country I find the concept of partying, clubbing, and dancing mindlessly to be utterly profane, and at best its irresponsible. We have a RESPONSIBILITY as citizens of the US (both the most privileged and most dastardly in terms of a homicidal foreign policy) to use our privilege at all times to:

1. WAKE EACH OTHER UP
2. SPREAD THE WORD
3. FIGHT TYRANNY, INJUSTICE, AND FASCISM at home and abroad, especially when its in our name, like in Iraq or Afghanistan.

If I couldn't play records I would probably be a professional:
Gimp, because pushing play on a record player is about as easy as it gets. Now if I wasn’t a professional DJ, I might explore the wild world of kite-flying, or giving karate lessons to my pet Iguana (who is also my guru - I call him Baba Ram GuGu), or being a tour guide through the produce section at Whole Foods Market. If that failed, I could take up writing, film, teaching, public office, social change, work in the peace core, work at a hospice, fight cancer, fight illiteracy, or fight the Bu$h Administration. Or, on rainy days, I could take a group of 7-year old children and together we could slash Dick Cheney's tires... it all sounds fun.

I want to thank these people for helping me get this far:
I have been thinking about this. I need to create like a permanent list or something, because the people who have helped me in one way or another number in the thousands. Seriously, everything I have accomplished or created is 100% indebted to so many people in the world, some who don’t even know it, and I’m not making a general statement. I mean there are specifically thousands of people who have changed my life and empowered me to grow. I will thank each of you in person.

What you want people to know and we didn't ask:
Well you didn’t ask if George W. Bush stole the election, but the answer is:
NO..the Republican Party, Fox News, and Halliburton did. But George W. Bush is still a punk.

My motto is:
“Privilege confers responsibility. You can face that responsibility, which may not be easy, but it's alot easier for us than for people in almost all the world, or you can shirk that responsibility; in which case you are leaving the future to be decided by forces that are anything but benign....." -Noam Chomsky
