The
track/DJ/party that made me want to be a DJ was:
The stand out track was Orbital's
"Halcyon+on+on."
That one pretty much turned me away from the Smashing Pumpkins to
this
weird, spooky electronic music. As for parties, Eklektic-Hektic
was
my Mecca. The first DJ whom I thought was the coolest was
Grandmaster
DXT, who did the scratching on "Rockit".
Influences:
Marc Bolin, Diamond David Lee
Roth,
Parry Farrell, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Lou Reed, David Bowie,
Flea,
Bon Jovi, Ryuchi Sakamoto, Philip Glass, Mike Oldfield, Tangerine
Dream,
Stan Getz, Billy Holiday, Hunter S. Thompson, Magnum P.I.,
Goldie.
I got my first break:
I was seven and jumping my bmx
bike over
a tree stump and didn't
quite clear it... wait, is that what you meant? Or, there's the
time I
found "Rapper's Delight" with "The Message" on
the
flip at Tower Records when it had a head shop in the back. That
was
the dopest break of all.
Some DJs I like playing with are:
Kapt'n Kirk, 8 Ball, Mancub and
the
Geometrist from the Space Cowboys. Geez, any of the Space Cowboy
DJs
are money in the bank. Ben Chun and Haylon from False Profit,
Murph
Star.
Favorite thing about the SF scene:
The rich and flavorful cuisine.
And
the wine--phenomenal
Pinots and Cabernets from Napa and the central coast. The food and
wine
in SF is legendary. Indie fashion designers like Silver Lucy,
Tamo,
and Fliudance, who are defining the emerging SF style. An audience
with a deep and passionate appreciation for Bass.
Least favorite thing about the SF scene:
Vegans and speed. Not necessarily
in
that order.
My favorite SF party is/was:
Breakfast Of Champions. Anything
at
the False Profit warehouse. The Black Rock Hoe Down, (but that's
not
really in SF...)
La Belle Epoche at The Top. NewsBreakz Parties. Summer
Camp.
My
favorite Club to play in is:
Mighty.
Or any underground were JK Sound is doing the sound
system.
If
I could put together MY dream music festival, the Entertainment
would
be:
I would want to see Mozart conduct "The
Magic
Flute", the Duke Ellington Orchestra performing the "Far
East
Suite", and John Coltrane doing "A Love Supreme" in
its
entirety. Led Zeppelin, Bjork, T. Rex, Orbital, Jimi Hendrix vs.
Otis
Redding, Roni Size, Soul Coughing, and Joy Division.
If I couldn't play records I would probably be a
professional:
I would probably be a
professional
smart-ass or Rodeo Clown.
I want to thank these people for helping me get
this
far:
All the Space
Cowboys (you know who you are...) Victor at
BPM, Connie and Eric at Reverb, Mike Bee at
Amoeba (shop globally but spend locally!).
Everyone who's let me sleep on their couch.
Paola. Barak, the owner of Rockin' Java on
Haight St, who--years ago--let me drag my
decks down to his cafe and play jungle every
Sunday afternoon. Lunatic, Monkey Scratch,
Nasty, Dirty Punk. My mom for encouraging
my musical explorations and my sister for
putting up with the explorations. Diego and
the El Circo Dome. Felix the Dog, Ms. E, Ms.
Throwdown, Audio Angel and those responsible
for Eklektic. Seven and Sol. The Very Reverend
Alan Jones at Grace Cathedral. All the freakz
from Brass Tax, (and you are FREAKZ!) I know
I'm leaving someone out, so I'll thank you
in person. Mostly, I want to thank all the
SF breakz headz for being the freakiest freaks
that ever freaked in freakville.
What
you want people to know and we didn't ask:
My
lawyer has advised me not to speak on this matter at this time.
But
believe me, it's a great story...
My
motto is:
"Don't ask for permission, but
beg
for forgiveness."
